A time to Grow

Image
1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: 2 a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, 3 a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, 4 a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, 5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, 6 a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, 7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 8 a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. 9 What do workers gain from their toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on the human race. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet[a] no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people...

You Can Do It!

In my one of my favorite theatre productions, "My Fair Lady," Eliza Doolittle is trying to learn how to be a proper lady. Her teacher, Henry Higgins, is teaching her how to speak like a lady, dress like a lady, carry herself, and dress like a lady. The speaking part is a little tricky...."the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain" is what Eliza has to learn to say properly. Many times Eliza felt like giving up, she didn't see the potential in herself that Professor Higgins saw; because the eminent linguistics professor, treated her like a lady, she began living up to his expectations. I have come to realize that sometimes my managers at work are hard on me sometimes because I make excuses for why I may slack off and not live up the the fullest potential they see in me. We don't realize our own potential that's why others have to bring it out of us. We all need potential and word's of life spoken into our lives. I was telling someone earlier t...

Lessons from Oedipus

I think Oedipus has become a favorite of mine. I call him, "Oh-Edipus," but really the O is silent. Haha, one of the funny things about being homeschooled through high school was when I came across words I didn't know how to pronounce I just sounded them out and did the best I could. It's kinda pitiful...I guess that's why I've loved college so much, I have a teacher in the room. I first learned of Oedipus and watched the play in my Theatre Appreciation class last semester. I loved that class, and my professor...awesomeness. Anyway, I'm sure you're tired of me talking about Theatre Appreciation class all the time, it was very life changing for me and in the way I percived life, which for me is HUGE! Some of the themes in Oedipus are, the limits of free will, and willingness to ignore the truth. Oedipus is considered to be a tragedy play. Typically the protagonist of a tragedy commits some terrible crime without realizing how foolish and arrogan...

Pride

"Through pride the devil became the devil. Pride leads to every vice, it's the complete anti-God state of mind." -C.S. Lewis One of things I love about Spring and Summer other than pollen and sneezing every 3 seconds is being able outside after being in hibernation for the winter. I enjoy getting up and going out on the deck and listen to creation wake up and "talk" to each other. I'll take my Bible with me and whatever book I'm reading and sit and meditate on things. For a while now I've known I wanted to write on pride but have been waiting for God to reveal what about pride to write. I started to really think about it in Theatre Appreciation class (what else is new right? I told you that class changed my life). We watched "Oedipus", and my professor kinda lectured that Oedipus' major character flaw was pride. Then I got to thinking, pride sneaks up on us sometimes and we don't even know it's pride that is affecting...

Consistency, Initiative, Attendance

Image
My English Professor taught me a lot this semester, especially in life skills and how to be successful in every area of life. Some great qualities to possess are: Consistency, Initiative, and Attendance. When she lectured on this, she was talking in the context of school, however, this can relate to anything in life. Like rain is consistent, we have to be consistent in work, in things that really matter...no matter how hard they get. It's about "constantly adhering to the same principles and course; not contradicting yourself." Many times people around us will say negative things, and it can get us down and discouraged about a class or work project. That is when we can take the INITIATIVE to step up and tell somebody what's up...right? It's all about being a leader. For me, this is the hardest thing to do because, not only do I fight voices in the world, but like many others, I fight voices in my head saying I am worthless and will never measure up. ...

Seeing Beyond the Surface

Image
Working at McDonald's something I have come to realize is that on both sides of the counter we each don't know the first thing about each other. The customer doesn't know anything about me, and I don't know anything about the customer; all we see is the surface. This reality hit me last night as I was working the front counter. After taking a frail looking man's order, another customer came in that knew him. Overhearing their conversation at the counter I came to learn that the frail looking man had advanced lung cancer...all the while having 2 packs of Menthol Marlboro's hanging out of his shirt. Then the customer doesn't know anything about me. All I am is a crew member at McDonald's. They don't know I write this awesome blog, or study Theology and Philosophy. They don't know I'm involved in my church, or go to school. At times it bothers me, because there are some people who look down on me, and look at me like I'm stupid, and...

Philosophy and Theatre

Image
Professor Wilson, this one's for you. This semester I have been blessed to be in my Theatre Appreciation course. Who knew what I would learn in there would be life changing for me. I have had an awesome professor, and am so privileged and honored to sit under her teaching. I don't say that about a lot of teachers. I must say though, at Central Piedmont I have had some wonderful teachers and a good experience so far. This semester has been among the top best as I have loved all my classes and professors. I have finally set some goals for myself thanks to some instructors/professors sitting down with me and helping me plan out stuff. I have come to decide that I'll be pursuing a B.A. at UNC-W in Philosophy and Religion. In Theatre Appreciation we covered some Philosophers that influenced Theatre mainly being Aristotle. Really it all started with Oedipus where I started to get really interested in Theatre History and draw connections to things I understood mainly as a...

Reflecting

Image
As I was sitting in Halton Theatre not long ago waiting to learn about Shakespeare, I started to reflect on the good things the Lord has done for me in over the past year. Why it came at that time, I don't know...but in any case I reflected. What a good God we serve y'all! There are times we don't stop and think about all the things God gives us and really thank Him and be taken in his sovreignty. His favor follows us, faithful is our Father, he fulfills His every promise in our lives. He knows the desires of our hearts, and wants to give us what we desire. Suddenly, when we remember and list all that God has done it makes a bad day good. When we remember to Thank Him, and be filled with aweness of who He is in our lives, it's incredible. When is the last time you've reflected on your life, and the good God has brought?
