Be a Leader

"Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people."
-Colossians 3:23

On the Mission Trip we find ourselves doing some things we wouldn't normally find ourselves doing such as cleaning up debris, sweeping a parking lot, washing a lot of cars, or cleaning a church if you do it unto the Lord it's like earning gold. As Christians we try to mirror God in our lives, in Matthew 20:26-28 Jesus says "But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus' description of leadership is to serve people. Jesus served others and even gave His live away. A real leader appreciates others and realizes he's not above any job. We challenged the students to think about the upcoming service projects we would be doing and to take the initiative to do to it like a faithful servant.
To be a leader you have to also commit. A flippant attitude won't get you in a leadership position. Abraham Lincoln once said "Commitment is what transforms a promise into reality. It is the words that speak boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak louder than words. It is making that time where there is none. Coming through time after time after time, year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff character is made of; the power to change the face of things. It is the daily triumph of integrity over skepticism." We have to commit to serve the Lord everyday, Joshua says "As for me and my house we will serve the Lord." Jesus even says again in Matthew "Whatever you did unto the least of these you have done unto me."
To be a leader you need the Holy Spirit. I shared in the previous post something my Granddaddy wrote, praying the Holy Spirit would fill him and empower Him to live like he ought to. I would encourage you to read Acts and Ephesians. In Acts you will find how the first-century church got started, and how several hundred radically different people accomplished the complicated and time consuming task of taking Jesus' story all over the world. You will find how they handled conflicts, and what kept them going when the hard times hit. What is it that the first Christians had that is lacking among believers today? Dive into Acts! It might even help you improve your own church. Ephesians purpose is to strengthen the Christians faith by explaining the nature and purpose of the church. It tells us how powerful we are in the Spirit.
So step up and be a leader! Leadership is most needed in the church, and you're just the one for the job :). Our mission statement at my church is "Love and lead everyone we meet into an everyday walk with Christ: Everyday matters."
