The Temple of God

This past week leaders in the Student Worship group were able to share a time of devotion with the kids. It was a huge blessing to give it and also receive it from other leaders. One evening a devotion was given on our bodies being the Temple. It was such a timely message, and I gleaned a lot from it personally.
I wonder if a lot of us realize that it's not just what you put into your body and destroy it, but it's also how you present yourself, how we make decisions, and staying sexually pure. 1 Corinthians 3:16 says "Don't you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?" If we realized the depth of this verse we would live a lot differently. The Spirit gives us power to do His work and achieve greatness, surely He can empower us to do what is right for the Temple. Further into 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 it is repeated again that "Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body." God gave us our bodies so that He could dwell with in us. Who am I to say that it's okay to let garbage in through what I watch, hear, and go destroying the Temple of the King who lives in me?!
We should stay sexually pure, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 says "God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin. Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor—not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways. Never harm or cheat a Christian brother in this matter by violating his wife, for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before. God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives." Through out this verse Paul repeats a few times that God desires us to be holy. We are challenged to be sexually holy. Though sex is not wrong, it is abused and demeaned by society. Therefore, we as Christians must the planted into God's standards, because they never change. He makes everything we do holy if we do it unto Him. It is emphasized again that we are given the Holy Spirit who will empower us to live holy lives before Him. He can also cleanse us from all impurities and make us clean as we were before we messed up, so don't think it's end if you've already given yourself away.
We reflect the Kingdom of God in everything we do because we belong to it. Where you go, what you say, what you watch, what you listen to, every action reflects the King. So think about what you are doing, does it please God? If it doesn't then you don't need to do it. Start praying for discernment for your life. I was blessed to have a youth pastor in my early pre-teen years encourage me to start praying for wisdom and discernment and now 10 years later I'm still praying for it. You don't belong to yourself, you are a dwelling place for the King. When you are married you are still not your own you belong to your spouse, make choices that will honor them.
