Naming Our Challenges in Lyrics

Image
Those who know me personally know that I have been writing music since the age of twelve.  Music has been a HUGE part of my life.  To date I have written close to 100 songs, maybe not a lot to boast in for a 20 year span, but nonetheless these are lyrics that tell a story.  It is even okay with me if no one else likes my music and lyrics their purpose served to bring me close to God and know His heart for me, and me express myself.   My songwriting skills have gotten better overtime, and recently I have joined in with The Getty's Hymn Writers Collective in learning to be a better songwriter.  Through their Sing! Global ministry I have been able to take part in being mentored and have access to content that I couldn't have even dreamed of even a few years ago.  I've been so grateful for the fresh drink this has been in my song writing "career" to be challenged, and given ideas to think on and develop.   Maybe we can all agree that there...

My Healing Journey

Image
"Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom." This summer I suffered a severe mental breakdown that put me in behavioral health hospital for a little over a week.  The quote above was written outside my door.  This had been building for the past decade or two and our present conditions made the perfect storm for everything to burst open.  It was a sinking feeling when my primary care physician looked at me and said, "There's nothing more I can do to help you."  She told my friend who had taken me to see her that morning to take me directly to Behavioral Health Hospital on Billingsly, don't go home to get anything, don't stop on the way.  She told me based on all I had spilled to her that I didn't have time, that I could only go on a few more months in the condition I was in mentally. I was assessed by many doctors and nurses.  I had to strip, searched and put on scrubs to make sure ...

Kingdom Lifestyles: The Way of Singing

Image
"Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing." And every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all things in them, I heard saying, "To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever. And they sang the song of Moses , the bond-servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, "Great and marvelous are Your works, O Lord God, the Almighty; Righteous and true are Your ways, King of the nations! "Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy; For ALL THE NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP BEFORE YOU, FOR YOUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS HAVE BEEN REVEALED."...

Christos Doxa

Image
The King of Glory and His Kingdom, a song of David. We have a King in glory! The Lord Jesus was born King, the wise men worshiped Him as King. He was Crucified King. This is the Song of Ascension. When Jesus, being triumphant over death, after His resurrection, ascended into Heaven in a Shekinah cloud of glory, the gates of Heaven burst open wide for the King of Glory! Christ Jesus won the victory. He is the Lord strong and mighty in battle! Last year I wrote a song called Christos Doxa, Greek Lexicon translates it to Christs Glory. It's a sweet little Easter Song, and I believe it is a song when we truly encounter Jesus and His glory in our lives this becomes our response. Make way for the King of Glory! Verse 1: King of Glory lifted high, holy passion burns in my heart. Hosanna leaves my lips I sing, King of glory in my midst. Beholding beauty this holy thing, I'm in awe, I'm in awe. Who is this King of Glory? Chorus: Holy is your life, Hosanna to the cross, H...

How to Write a Song

Image
"I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand. He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORD and put their trust in him." -Psalm 40 I started writing songs and music when I was 14. I believe it is a gift. I started out writing goofy songs, then God moved my heart and I began to write music for Him and the things I had experienced in life. Writing music has been a theraputic thing for me in understanding heart ache. I'm glad God inspires it because other words without Him in my music it would be whiney and depressing...like a country song. Jesus is everything in my music he gives it all to me. I'm very thankful for this gift. Many of you have probably wanted to write a song but were not sure where to begin, or what song structure looks like. Recently, in my communicati...

The Stand

"Stand up, Stand up for Jesus ye soldiers of the cross. Lift high his royal banner, ye shall not suffer loss. From Victory unto Victory His army shall he lead, till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed." I wrote a song called "The Stand" 7 days after a traumatic circumstance occurred in my life February 13, 2007. The day this song was in composing mode, I remember being at the alter all day in hopes to understand and talk to God about the whole circumstance, and hear from Him. I wondered if anyone cared and would walk with me through this pain and hurt. We tend to need people in our lives to help us walk these deep valleys. But, there are times when it's just going to have to be you and God doing the nasty stuff in life, the things that can't be talked about. There are times when people just can't feel what you feel. The first 2 verses of this song are the questioning and crying out to God. Almost like a Job moment. Can anyone see t...
